OPERATION
The annulus gea r (1) (F ig. 218) a nd su n gear (3)
elements of a planetar y gear system are alternately
dr iven an d br aked by the act uating elements of the
multi-plate clut ch and multiple-disc brake. The pla n-
etar y pin ion gea rs (2) ca n turn on the interna l gear-
ing of t he ann ulus gea r (1) an d on the exter nal
gear ing of the su n gear (3). This allows for a variety
of gea r ratios and th e reversal of t he rotation direc-
tion without the n eed for m ovin g gear wh eels or shift
colla rs. When two com pon ents of th e pla neta ry gear
set are locked together, the planet ary gear set is
locked and t urns a s a closed unit.
The tor que and engine speed ar e conver ted accord-
ing t o th e lever rat ios a nd t he ratio of th e n umber of
teeth on t he driven gears to that on th e drive gea rs,
and is r eferred t o a s the gea r ratio. Th e overa ll ratio
of a n umber of planet ary gear sets conn ected in
series is obta ined by mu ltiplying the pa rtial ratios.
