time after another: The shift ra nge is reduced in
descending sequence by one gear ea ch tim e, i.e., from
D-4-3-2-1.Iftheselect ed limitation of the shift
range wou ld resu lt in a down sh ift causing excessive
engine speed, the shiftin g is not executed and the
enga ged gea r as well a s the shift range rem ain
unchanged. This is to prevent the engine from over-
speeding. En gin e ret ardat ion is low with the selector
lever in position “D”. To make use of the full bra king
power of the engine, “manual” downshiftin g by tip-
ping the lever t owards the left -hand side is r ecom-
mended. If this has been done, subsequen t u psh ifting
must be ca rried out ma nually as well.

holding it in this position: The cur rently engaged
gear in ran ge “D” is indica ted in the instr umen t clus-
ter display and the shift range is limited to th is gear.
• Tippin g th e se le ctor le ve r tow ard “+” on e
time after another: The shift r ange is increa sed by
one gear each tim e an d the increa sed shift ra nge is
displayed in the in st rumen t cluster ; possibly, t he
transmission u pshifts to a faster gear.
• Tippin g the se le ctor l ever tow ard “+” sev-
eral times: The sh ift ra nge is increa sed by one gea r
each tim e the lever is tipped until the shift ra nge
en ds u p in “D”.
• Tippin g t h e se l e ctor lever tow ar d “+” an d
holding it in this position: The shift r ange is
extended immediately to “D”, shift ran ges are indi-
cated in ascending sequence; possibly, the t ransmis-
sion upsh ifts to a faster gea r due to th e extension of
the sh ift ran ge.
REMOVAL
(1) Move selector lever t o position “D”.
(2) Remove top section (3) (Fig. 222) of the center
section of instr umen t pa nel.
(3) Remove bot tom sect ion (2) (F ig. 223) of t he cen-
ter section of in st rument panel.
