STA TOR
The stator assembly (1-4) (Fig. 245) is mounted on
a station ary shaft which is an in tegr al part of the oil
pump.
The stat or (1) is locat ed between the impeller (2)
and tur bine (4) within the torque con vert er case (Fig.
246). Th e stat or contains a freewh eeling clut ch,
which allows th e sta tor to rota te on ly in a clockwise
direct ion. When the st ator is locked against t he fr ee-
wheeling clutch, t he torque multiplica tion fea tur e of
the t orque converter is operationa l.
TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC)
The TCC (9) (F ig. 247) was insta lled to improve
the efficiency of the torqu e convert er th at is lost to
the slippage of th e fluid coupling. Alth ough th e fluid
coupling provides sm ooth, shock-free power t ran sfer,
it is na tural for a ll flu id couplings t o slip. If the
impeller and turbine wer e mechan ically locked
toget her, a z ero slippage condition could be obt ained.
A hydr aulic pist on with friction ma terial was added
to the tur bine a ssembly to pr ovide this mech anical
lock-up.
In order to redu ce heat build-up in th e transm is-
sion and buffer the powertrain aga inst torsional
vibrations, the TCM can duty cycle the torque con-
vert er lock-up solenoid t o achieve a smoot h a pplica-
tion of the torque converter clutch . This funct ion,
referred to as Electronically Modulated Convert er
Clut ch (EMCC) can occu r at var ious times depen ding
on the following var iables:
