front cover of the compressor. Be certa in that the
sn ap ring is properly fully and properly sea ted in the
groove.
(6) If the original clutch plate and clu tch pulley
are to be r eused, reinstall the original shim(s) on th e
compressor shaft against the shou lder. If a n ew
clutch plate a nd/or clutch pulley are being used,
insta ll a tr ial stack of shims 1.0 mm (0.040 in . ) th ick
on the com pr essor shaft aga inst th e shoulder.
(7) In st all the clut ch pla te ont o th e compressor
sh aft.
(8) In st all and t ighten the compressor shaft bolt. If
necessar y, a band-type oil filter wren ch or a str ap
wrench can be placed a round the clutch plat e to aid
in bolt t ightening. Tighten t he bolt to 17.5 N·m (155
in. lbs.).
NOTE: The shims may compress after tightening
the shaft bolt. Check the air gap in four or more
places to verify the air gap is still correct. Spin the
pulley before performing a final check of the air
gap.
(9) If a new clutch plate an d/or clutch pulley a re
being installed, the air gap between the clu tch pla te
and clutch pulley must be ch ecked (Refer to 24 -
HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/CONTROLS/A/C
COMPRE SSOR CLUTCH - STANDARD PROCE-
DURE ).
(10) Install t he r etainer that secu res the compres-
sor clutch coil lead to the t op of the compressor.
(11) Reconnect the engine wire har ness connector
to th e clutch coil lead on t he top of the compressor.
(12) Rein st all t he serpentine a ccessor y drive belt
(Refer to 7 - COOLING/ACCE SSORY DRIVE/DRIVE
BELTS - INSTALLATION).
(13) Reconn ect the batt ery n egative cable.
(14) If a new clutch plat e an d/or clutch pulley are
being in stalled, the n ew clutch componen ts m ust be
burn ished (Refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDI-
TIONING/CONTROLS/A/C COMPRESSOR CLUTCH
- STANDARD PROCEDURE).

A / C COMPRESSOR CLUTCH COIL
The air conditionin g com pr essor clutch coil electri-
cal circu it is con trolled by t he ATC cont rol module
which is integra l to the hea ter-A/C control. Begin
testing of a suspected compressor clutch coil problem
by perfor min g the ATC Fu nction Test using t he
DRBII I! sca n tool.
PRELIMINARY CHECKS
(1) If no dia gnostic trouble codes (DTCs) ar e fou nd
in th e A/C-hea ter cont rol or the powertrain control
module (PCM), go to Step 2. If a ny DTCs ar e foun d,
repair as required.
(2) If th e A/C compressor clu tch st ill will not
enga ge, ver ify th e r efrigera nt ch arge level (Refer t o
24 - HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING/P LUMBING
- DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - REFRIGE RANT
SYSTEM LEAKS). If t he r efrigera nt charge level is
OK, go to TE STS. If th e refrigerant charge level is
not OK, a djust th e refr iger ant cha rge as requir ed.
TESTS
(1) Verify the bat tery stat e of char ge (Refer t o 8 -
ELECTRICAL/BATTERY SYSTEM/BATTE RY -
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
(2) Connect an am meter (0 to 10 ampere scale
selected) in series with t he clutch coil feed t erminal.
Connect a voltmeter (0 t o 20 volt sca le selected) to
measu re volta ge across t he ba tter y and the clutch
coil.
(3) With the A/C-heat er con trol in the A/C m ode
and the blower motor at low speed, star t th e engine
and allow it to r un at a normal idle speed.
(4) The A/C compressor clutch sh ould enga ge
immediately, an d the clutch coil supply voltage
sh ould be with in t wo volts of th e batt ery volta ge. If
the coil supply volta ge is OK, go t o St ep 5. If the coil
su pply volt age is n ot within t wo volts of batt ery volt-
age, test th e clut ch coil feed circuit for excessive volt -
age dr op a nd repa ir as necessary.
(5) For the accept able A/C clut ch coil current draw
specifica tions refer to 24 - HEATING & AIR CONDI-
TIONING - SPE CIF ICATIONS. Specifications a pply
for a work area tempera ture of 21° C (70° F). If volt-
age is more than 12.5 volts, add electrical loads by
turning on elect rica l accessories un til voltage reads
below 12.5 volts.
(a) If th e A/C clutch coil curr ent readin g is zero,
the coil is open and m ust be replaced.
(b) If the A/C clutch coil current reading is a bove
specifica tions, the coil is shorted and m ust be
repla ced.
