A/CEVAPORAT OR
DESCRIPTION
The A/C evapora tor for the heating-A/C system is
locat ed within th e HVAC housin g, behind th e instru-
ment pan el (Fig. 8). The A/C evaporator is posit ioned
with in the HVAC housing so that a ll air entering the
housin g m ust pass over th e evapora tor fins before it
is distributed thr ough the heating-A/C syst em duct s
and outlets. However, air pa ssing over th e evaporator
fins will only be conditioned when t he A/C compres-
sor is en gaged a nd circulating refrigera nt t hrough
the A/C evaporator.
The A/C evaporator tubes are con nected a nd sealed
to the A/C expan sion valve by use of rubber O-rin gs
and a ta pping block.
The A/C evapora tor is ser viced by r emoving an d
disassemblin g th e HVAC housing.
OPERATION
Refrigerant ent ers the evapora tor from the expan-
sion valve a s a low-tem perature, low-pressure liqu id.
As air flows over the fins of th e evapora tor, the
humidity in t he a ir condenses on the fins, and the
heat from the air is a bsor bed by the refr iger ant . Heat
absorption causes the refrigera nt to boil an d vapor-
ize. The r efrigera nt becomes a l ow-pressure gas
before it lea ves th e eva por ator.
The evaporator cannot be r epair ed an d, if fau lty or
da maged, it must be replaced.
REMOVAL
WARNING: To avoid personal injury or death, on
vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the supple-
mental restraint system before attempting any
steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt
tensioner, impact sensor, or instrument panel com-
ponent diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two
minutes for the system capacitor to discharge
before performing further diagnosis or service. This
is the only sure way to disable the supplemental
restraint system. Failure to take the proper precau-
tions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
