DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - STARTER MOTOR
Correct st arter motor oper ation can be confirmed
by perform ing t he following free r unning bench t est .
This test can only be per formed wit h starter m otor
removed from veh icle. Refer to Starter Specifications
for specifications.
(1) Remove sta rter motor from vehicle. Refer to
St arter Motor Removal and In stallation.
(2) Mount sta rter motor securely in a soft -jawed
bench vise. The vise jaws should be clamped on the
mounting fla nge of starter motor. Never cla mp on
st arter m otor by field fr ame.
(3) Connect a suita ble volt -ampere test er an d a
12-volt battery to sta rter motor in series, an d set
ammet er to 100 a mpere sca le. See instr uctions pro-
vided by manu factur er of volt -amper e tester being
used.
(4) In st all jum per wire from solenoid ter min al to
solenoid ba tter y ter minal. The starter m otor sh ould
operat e. If st arter motor fails to operate, replace
faulty st arter m otor assembly.
(5) Adjust carbon pile load of test er t o obtain free
running test voltage. Refer t o Specifica tion s for
st arter mot or free runnin g test volta ge specifications.
(6) Note rea ding on amm eter and compare rea ding
to free r unning test maximu m amperage dr aw. Refer
to Specifications for sta rter mot or free ru nning test
maximu m amperage draw specifications.
(7) If ammet er reading exceeds maximu m a mper-
age dr aw specification, r eplace fa ult y sta rter motor
assembly.
STARTER SOLENOID
This test can only be performed with sta rter m otor
removed from vehicle.
(1) Remove sta rter motor from vehicle. Refer to
St arter Motor Removal and In stallation.
(2) Disconn ect wir e from solenoid field coil termi-
nal.
(3) Check for continuity between solenoid t erminal
and solenoid field coil terminal with a contin uity
