1. General
This chapter contains information about the engine starting system and its components.
For the operating instructions, refer to the Operation Manual.
2. System Description
The engine starting system contains the following components:
- Electrical Starter
- Glow Plug Control Unit
Old version (black housing)
New version (silver housing)
A. Electrical Starter
The starter is used for engine cranking until it starts. The starter is manually controlled by the pilot.
The EECU detects a running engine at 600rpm (Propeller) and further activation is not necessary.
B. Glow Plug Control Unit
The glow plug control unit is only used to increase the cold starting behavior of the engine on ground.
It actuates the glow plugs. The glow plugs help to ignite the compressed fuel/air mixture because of
their hot surface temperature.
The glow plug control unit actuates the glow plugs depending on the coolant temperature. The glow
function is not started if coolant water temperature is >20 °C.
The glow system is designed to be active only if the aircraft is on ground (not active during flight).
This is provided by an “A/C on ground indication”, which must be implemented into the aircraft
design. This needs to be low if active (switch to GND if active).
Lamp outputs are provided by the GPC. If they are not used, install a 5 kOhm pull-down resistor
instead of the lamps (Announcement Lamp and Caution Lamp). Refer to applicable Aircraft
Maintenance Manual. Announcement lamp is only switched on shortly after GPC has started heat up
phase of glow plugs.
