02 – Strorage and Preservation
5. Storage and Preservation
A. Storage of a received engine
The storage time limit after initial preservation of the engine ex works is 36 months (see the
shipping documents, e.g. engine log). If this period is exceeded, contact Austro Engine GmbH for
further instructions.
The preservation is only guaranteed if the blue protective bag, in which the engine is
wrapped up, is not damaged or broken.
For a received, new, or an overhauled engine, this procedure prepares the engine for a long-term
storage.
The following conditions apply:
Keep the engine in its wooden shipping box.
The temperature during storage shall not be below -30 °C (-22 °F).
Put the engine in a storage with dry environment.
It is recommended to use a silica bag.
The relative humidity shall not be more than 70%.
The engine shall be protected from excessive moisture, splash water or rain.
The engine shall be stored in suitable workplaces in a horizontal position, the cylinder axis must
have an angle of 34°, always covered against environmental influences and never outside. For
further information, refer to the Installation Manual E4.02.01 Chapter 6 “Installation Position”.
B. Preservation of an installed engine
If the engine is installed and it is not intended to be operated for a longer time, the following is
required:
Between -30 °C and -53 °C:
The engine has to be run at least once every 2 weeks according to the following procedure:
In case of prolonged temperatures below -38 °C, change water / radiator protection
mixture ratio to 40:60.
Before engine start, warm up engine compartment without engine running until oil,
gearbox, and coolant temperature indicates temperatures above -30 °C.
The V-Ribbed belt and sealing rings can be damaged when operating the engine
without prior warm up.
