Extract from ANSI B11.1-2001 8.2.1.5
Regarding safety distance for two-hand controls
Standard Requirements Explanatory Information
8.5.2.1.5 Each operator’s hand actuating
control shall be located at a distance from the
point-of-operation so that the operator(s) cannot
release either hand actuating control and reach
into the point-of-operation prior to die closure
or prior to cessation of slide motion during the
closing portion of the cycle (stroke).
E8.5.2.1.5 The total stopping time of the press
should include the total response time of the
control system and the time it takes the press to
cease slide motion. The following formula
should be used when calculating the safety
distance (D
s
):
D
s
= K ( T
s
+ T
c
+ T
bm
)
Where:
K = 63 inches/second (hand speed constant).
T
s
= the stop time of the press measured from
the final de-energized control element, usually
the air valve.
T
c
= the response time of the control.
T
bm
= the additional time allowed by the brake
monitor before it detects stop time
deterioration.
NOTE – T
s
+ T
c
are usually measured by a
stop time measuring device.
When the press stopping-performance monitor
timer or STOP position sensor is changed, the
safety distance should be recalculated. See
also, Annex C.
