The maintenance signals are SONET,

Figure 9-1 shows the maintenance signals used by the FT-2000 OC-48
Add/Drop-Rings Terminal when interfacing with DS3 low-speed signals.
Figure 9-2 shows the maintenance signals used by the FT-2000 OC-48
Add/Drop-Rings Terminal when interfacing with EC-1, OC-3, IS-3, and OC-12
low-speed signals. Figure 9-3 shows the maintenance signals used by the
FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal for through tributaries. Figure 9-4
shows the maintenance signals used by the FT-2000 OC-48 Repeater Bay. In
these figures, the labels on the arrows pointing into the FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave
System show the maintenance signals and failure conditions recognized. The
labels on the arrows pointing out of the FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave System show
the signals generated in response to the incoming maintenance signals or failure
conditions. The Xs show failure points within the FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave
System or in upstream equipment. Unlabeled arrows show normal transmission.
