The path-in-line architecture is a self-healing network architecture that provides
end-to-end survivable DS1 and DS3 services. Figure 2-12 shows an OC-3
path-switched ring using part of the bandwidth of an OC-48 bidirectional
line-switched ring. The OC-3 interfaces can contain a mixture of VT1.5 and STS-1
channels for all types of services. The capability to mix services, instead of having
application-specific assignments for STS-1 tributaries, conserves the bandwidth
of OC-3 access rings.
