BITS
Building Integrated Timing Supply — A single clock that provides all the DS1 and DS0 synchroniza-
tion references required by clocks in a building.

Clear Channel with Alarm Indication Signal Insertion — A provisionable mode for the DS3 output in
which the outgoing DS3 signals are passed through without any violation monitoring. If an incoming
loss of signal is detected, a DS3 AIS is inserted.

CIT
Craft Interface Terminal — A personal computer that meets FT-2000 minimum requirements loaded
with the FT-2000 CIT-PC software or
CPro-2000 software (Release 5 and later). In Release 5 and
later releases, an ASCII-based (dumb) terminal that meets FT-2000 minimum requirements can
also be used as a craft interface terminal.
CCITT
International Telephone and Telegraph Consultative Committee — An international advisory com-
mittee under United Nations sponsorship that has composed and recommended for adoption world-
wide standards for international communications. Recently changed to the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecommunication Standardization Sector (TSS).
CO
Central Office — A telephone company building where switching and/or transmission system equip-
ment is located.
Concatenated Switching
Concatenated switching provides protection for simultaneous failures in adjacent sections of the
same service line or different service lines. In concatenated switching the protection line is divided
into sections. Each section of the protection line can be used to protect any service line in the sec-
tion. Consequently, simultaneous failures in more than one section can be protected.
