5. In order to take advantage of the STS-1 related
features the NE must be loaded with R7.0.1 or
later software. If it is necessary to load
(upgrade) the software of the ring, the
recommendation is to upgrade the software at
all NEs within the ring before beginning to
upgrade any of the NE's optical packs. As
necessary, refer to the "Software Release
Description" that accompanies the particular
software and to "Operation: NTP-005" for steps
on how to copy software from one NE to another
NE.

6. After the software upgrade is completed and the
ring is running R7.x or later software, verify that
there are no active alarms or status conditions
by selecting the FAULT-Retrieve-Alarms (and
Status):All or by pressing function key F9.
Review the Active Alarms and Status Report
and clear any conditions before continuing with
this procedure.

7. Identify the two nodes to be upgraded and
assign personnel to be at those two nodes
(node A and node B).

8. Make sure that the Forced Switch is
performed on the proper direction (E or W) at
the respective two nodes.
From the CIT, access the NEs to be Protection
Switched. For node "A" select the
FAULT-Switch-Line-1E:Forced command.

9. For node "B" select the
FAULT-Switch-Line-1W:Forced command.
