System Introduction
1-4 Issue 8.0 July 2002
The FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave System also offers flexible OC-48 high-speed
interfaces. Standard performance and high performance 1.3 µm OC-48 high-
speed interfaces support spans of at least 53 and 60 kilometers, respectively.
The 1.5 µm OC-48 high-speed interface* supports spans of at least 92 kilometers.
The lightwave booster amplifier (LBA) standard performance 1.5 µm OC-48 high-
speed interface* supports spans up to 140 km using standard fiber and spans up
to 160 km using dispersion-shifted fiber. For information about OC-48 high-speed
protection, refer to Volume I, Section 9, "Maintenance Description."

The FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave System is designed for easy installation and
operation. Centralized operation is supported by a full set of remote maintenance
and control features. Automatic turnup tests and original value provisioning
simplify installation and eliminate the need for external test equipment. Most
tasks can be performed using the user panel and circuit pack faceplate
light-emitting diodes (LEDs), displays, and controls. The personal
computer-based craft interface terminal gives access to sophisticated
maintenance and reporting features.
The FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave System will be made available in a series of
phased product releases. These phased product releases will provide new sets of
features. This user/service manual covers Releases 1 through 7.2 and will be
updated to cover additional releases as they become available. As a review,
Release 1 provides the FT-2000 OC-48 1x1 End Terminal platform and a basic
OC-48 point-to-point system. Release 2 updates the FT-2000 OC-48 1x1 End
Terminal platform and provides the FT-2000 OC-48 Repeater Bay platform.
Release 3 provides the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal platform and
two-fiber bidirectional, line-switched rings. Release 4.0 updates the FT-2000
OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal and FT-2000 OC-48 Repeater Bay platforms.
Release 4.1 updates the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal platform with
enhanced TL1 commands/reports, password aging, and one-way cross-
connections. It also provides dual-ring interworking and gateway network element
operation. Release 5 updates the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal
platform with OC-3 low-speed interfaces, F and M bit adjusted DS3 performance
monitoring, more TL1 commands/reports, login aging, circuit provisioning audits,
and multiple bridge cross-connections. Release 6 updates the FT-2000 OC-48
Add/Drop-Rings Terminal platform with new operations interworking capabilities
available through the OC-3 data communications channel (DCC). Release 6 also
updates the FT-2000 OC-48 Repeater Bay with access to the OC-48 section
overhead bytes for orderwire.
Release 7 updates the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal platform with
STS-1 cross-connections across an OC-48 signal.
* The standard performance 1.5 µm OC-48 high-speed interfaces are only available with the
FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal.
