line switches in ≤60 milliseconds. This includes detection and switching time. In
Figure 2-1, the Eastbound service STS-3 tributaries (Service 1) are protected by
the Westbound protection STS-3 tributaries (Protection 1). The Westbound
service STS-3 tributaries (Service 2) are protected by the Eastbound protection
STS-3 tributaries (Protection 2). For example, in Figure 2-1, traffic may enter
Node A and be routed over the service STS-3 tributaries (

high-speed line 1E to Node B. If a fiber cut occurs, the traffic is switched to the
protection STS-3 tributaries (

The FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal offers a time slot assignment (TSA)
capability that allows any service STS-3 tributary of OC-48 high-speed line 1E or
1W to be cross-connected to any service low-speed interface slot (add/drop
cross-connection) or to the same-numbered service STS-3 tributary of the other
OC-48 high-speed line (through cross-connection).
In Release 7 and later, the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal and FT-2000
OC-48 Dual Lightwave Terminating Bay also offer a TSA capability that allows any
service STS-1 tributary of OC-48 high-speed line 1E or 1W to be cross-connected
to any service low-speed interface slot (add/drop cross-connection) or to the
same-numbered service STS-1 tributary of the other OC-48 high-speed line
(through cross-connection).
The FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal can also provide
extra traffic
.Extra
traffic allows access to the protection STS-3 tributaries for low-priority traffic or for
restoration purposes. In Release 7 and later releases, extra traffic also allows
access to the protection STS-1 tributaries for low-priority traffic or for restoration
purposes. Extra traffic is preempted if a two-fiber ring protection switch occurs.
