Non-Preemptible Protection Access (NPPA)
isatypeofextratraffic
. It increases
the service traffic capacity of a node at the expense of reducing bandwidth on
the protection fiber. However, service on corresponding tributaries will be lost (for
example, tributary 9 would be preserved and tributary 1 would be lost).
It should
be understood that this type of traffic is not impacted by a ring protection switch.
STS-3 NPPA is available in Release 7.1 and later. STS-1 NPPA is available in
Release 7.2 and later. Also, for each slot of STS-3 NPPA traffic (or STS-1 traffic)
on the protection fiber, there will also be a corresponding “non-protected” slot on
the service fiber.
NOTE:
Cross-connections (to administer and provision extra traffic) can be made
using the craft interface terminal (CIT) interface.
In Release 4.1 and later, cross-connections can also be made through the
message-based operations system interface, using X.25 protocol and Transaction
Language 1 (TL1) messages. For more information about cross-connections,
refer to Volume I, Section 8, “Administration and Provisioning.”
