GL-8 Issue 8.0 July 2002
EIA
Electronic Industries Association — A trade association of the electronics industry that establishes
electrical and functional standards.
Electrical Line Buildout
An equalizer network between the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings Terminal and the DSX or
STSX1 panel (or equivalent). It guarantees the proper signal level and shape at the DSX panel (or
equivalent).
EMC
Electromagnetic Compatibility.
EMI
Electromagnetic Interference — High-energy, electrically induced magnetic fields that cause data
corruption in cables passing through the fields.
EPROM
Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory — Readable memory that is nonvolatile in nature,
erased by exposure to intense ultraviolet light, and programmed externally from the processor that
uses it.
EQ
Equipped — A memory administrative state for slots. EQ refers to a slot that is fully monitored and
alarmed.
Equal Level Cross-Connect
A cross-connect panel where the signal strength (power) is the same for all the inputs and outputs
so that any output can be connected to any input. The DSX-3 is an example of an equal level
cross-connect panel.
ES
Errored Seconds — A second in which one or more coding violations are detected. Errored sec-
onds are monitored for the OC-48 line, OC-3 line, STS-48 section, STS-3 section, STS-1 path,
EC-1 line, and the DS3 path/line.
ESD
Electrostatic Discharge — The discharge of static electricity into equipment that potentially causes
component damage and logic errors.
ESF
Extended Super Frame — A DS1 format option.
Event
Events happen at a particular time (do not persist in time) and appear in the Retrieve-History
Report.
Executable Code
The "program" that controls the operation of the system.
Externally Timed
An operating condition of a network element in which it is locked to an external reference. (Also
referred to as Phase Locked in releases prior to Release 5.)
Extra Traffic
Extra traffic is a capability of the FT-2000 OC-48 Add/Drop-Rings terminal that allows access to the
protection STS-3 tributaries and STS-1 tributaries (Release 7 and later) of an OC-48 high speed
line for low priority traffic or for restoration purposes.
