Glossary
GL-16 Issue 8.0 July 2002
Phase Locked
An operating condition of a network element in which it is locked to an external reference. (Also
referred to as Externally Timed in Release 5 and later releases.)
Platform
In the FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave System, a platform is a family of equipment and software configu-
rations designed to support a particular set of applications.
Plesiochronous Network
A network that contains multiple subnetworks, each internally synchronous and all operating at the
same nominal frequency, but whose timing may be slightly different at any particular instant.
PLL
Phase Locked Loop.
PM
Performance Monitoring Measures the quality of service and identifies degrading or marginally
operating systems (before an alarm would be generated).
POH
Path Overhead Overhead assigned to and transported with the payload until the payload is
demultiplexed. It is used for functions that are necessary to transport the payload.
Preemptible Traffic
Also called "Extra Traffic"/ Traffic, which has a lower priority than that carried on the service fiber.
Low priority (unprotected) traffic that is carried on a protection fiber and is subject to being dropped
if the service fiber should fail and a protection switch occurs.
Preprovisioning
The capability to provision a slot before installing a circuit pack.
Primary Node
The primary node is the interconnecting node in the Dual Ring Interworking application where a
1-way-dri cross-connection has been entered. When a fault occurs, the through cross-connection
at the primary node switches to the active state, and the add cross-connection switches to the
standby state.
Proactive Maintenance
Refers to the process of detecting degraded conditions not severe enough to initiate protection
switching or alarming, but indicative of an impending signal fail or signal degrade defect.
Provisioning
Assigning a value to a parameter in memory.
PSC
Protection Switch Counts The number of times that a protection switch has been performed.
The protection switch counts are monitored for the OC-48 line and OC-3 line.
PVC
Permanent Virtual Circuit.
PWR
Power.
