RBP
Receive Byte Processor — A device on the OC48 RCVR and OC48 REGENR circuit packs.
RDI-L Signal
Line Remote Defect Indication Signal— An indication returned to a transmitting terminal that the
receiving terminal has detected an incoming failure. This is new terminology adopted by the T1M1
committee for the SONET environment, which replaces the far-end-receive-failure (FERF) signal. If
the RDI-L signal is integrated for a specified period of time, it becomes a remote failure indication
(RFI) signal (a defect becomes a failure). Also refer to RFI.
RDI-P Signal
Path Remote Defect Indicator — A maintenance signal inserted toward the OC-48 line by the DS3
circuit pack to show the presence of an alarm, detected at the remote terminal, in the path originat-
ing locally. This is new terminology adopted by the T1M1 committee for the SONET environment,
which replaces the path yellow signal. If the RDI-P signal is integrated for a specified period of time,
it becomes a remote failure indication (RFI) signal (a defect becomes a failure). Also refer to RFI.
RDS
Ring Diversity Switch.
Reactive Maintenance
Refers to detecting defects/failures and clearing them.
Revertive Switching
In revertive switching, there is a service and protection high speed line, circuit pack, etc. When a
protection switch occurs, the protection line, circuit pack, etc., is selected. When the fault clears,
service "reverts" back to the original service line. Also see 1x1 Line Protection.
RF
Raio Frequency.
RFI
Remote Failure Indication — A signal that alerts upstream STS-1 path terminating equipment that a
downstream failure has been alarmed along the STS-1 path. This action prevents multiple alarms
from being activated for the same failure.

Root Mean Square.

RTAC
Regional Technical Assistance Center — A Lucent Technologies organization that helps customers
maintain installed systems.

Return to Zero.
