S
SA
Service Affecting.
SAS
Severely Errored Frame/AIS Seconds — A second in which there is an out of frame or AIS defect
detected in the DS3 signal received from OC-48 line (DS3 path).
SD
Signal Degrade — A provisionable parameter for the incoming OC-48 high speed signal and DS3
signal (from cross-connect panel) that determines the threshold at which a signal degrade condition
is declared.
SDH
Synchronous Digital Hierarchy.
Secondary Node
The secondary node is the interconnecting node in the Dual Ring Interworking application where
only a 2-way add/drop (or a 1-way add and a 1-way drop) cross-connection has been entered. The
secondary node is adjacent to the primary node (also see Primary Node).
SEFS
Severely Errored Frame Seconds — The number of seconds during which an out-of-frame event
occurred. The severely errored frame seconds are monitored for the ^STS-48 section, STS-3 sec-
tion, and EC-1 section.
SES
Severely Errored Seconds — A second in which the coding violations detected reach a fixed thresh-
old. The severely errored seconds are monitored for the OC-48 line, OC-3 line, STS-48 section,
STS-3 section, STS-1 path, EC-1 line, and DS3 path.
SF
Signal Fail — Refers to a condition when an incoming signal's bit error rate exceeds a fixed value.
Single-Ended Operations
The capability to perform operations, administration, maintenance, and provisioning of remote net-
work elements on a centralized basis.
Site Address
The confirmed F-byte address of the network element on OC-48 high speed lines. The site address
consists of the line address and site number (for example, site-1e-0/site-1w-4).
SLM
Single Longitudinal Mode.
Software Ready
The software that runs on the FT-2000 OC-48 Lightwave System will accept, run, boot, and operate
normally when future hardware (circuit packs) is installed.
SONET
Synchronous Optical NETwork — The American National Standards Institute's standard for broad-
band optical fiber communications.
