Prepare Your SPM System
5
Channels, Output Channels, Lock-in Amplifiers, Filters, Phase Locked Loops, High Voltage Drives,
Microscopes, Piezoelectric Actuators, Signal Combining tools, LabVIEW components, Proportional-
Integral (PI) Controllers and many other real Hardware Items. Components are wired together
according to signal flow logic. This signal flow wiring effectively replicates the real hardware wiring.
Typically, Hardware Space is static and will be configured infrequently. Hardware Space will only
need to be changed if you add new hardware or signal processing components in the SPM working
environment (new microscope, using different inputs and outputs, etc.). The extensibility of Hardware
Space means the R9 Control System can grow and evolve along with your working environment.
Procedure Space: Experiments, imaging investigations and performance tests are made up of
sequences of simple steps. The simple steps are called Procedures and are developed in Procedure
Space using an iconic environment to define, organize and combine Procedures in complex
reproducible investigations and experiments. Example components in Procedure Space include Start,
Stop, Pause, If/Then/Else. Loop, State, and Activate and the wiring that links their input and output
pins.
Dashboard: The Dashboard holds the Scan Area Window and all other real-time controls. The
Dashboard only has controls for the items present in Hardware Space so the Dashboard never has
controls for items you did not want. For example, if your Hardware Space has no Bias, there will be no
Bias controls in the Dashboard. If your SPM system evolves from one to two scanners (say one for the
tip and one for the probe) then the necessary Dashboard controls will automatically become available
as soon as the new hardware is added to Hardware Space. Since the hardware controls for Imaging
and Spectroscopy reside on the Dashboard, the Dashboard also has the controls to launch the
Procedures that create topographic and spectroscopy data.
Browser: The Browser is an offline data processing, analyzing, and viewing tool. The Browser can
also provide access to the History of every experiment you perform in the form of the individual time
series for each excitation and response signal in your experimental data stream.
The relevant aspects of these R9 Software components will be discussed as they are used throughout
the Quick Start Guide. To minimize the start up time, RHK has provided these components in
preconfigured packages that form a complete basic environment for performing all the standard SPM
tasks. As your uses expand and become more complex and demanding, the R9 Control System will help
make the transition simpler, more reliable and more cost effective.
1.4.3 Open a Preconfigured IHDL™ File
Now that the software has been opened, and assuming the software is connected to the hardware, a
preconfigured IHDL can be opened if it is not already loaded. Select Open > Open IHDL... from the
Workbench Toolbar. For this example, open one of the following:
C:\RHK Technology\Rev 9\IHL Files\UHV 300.ihl.
C:\RHK Technology\Rev 9\IHL Files\UHV 350.ihl.
C:\RHK Technology\Rev 9\IHL Files\PAN STM.ihl.
