9. Lock-in Amplifier: (not shown) This virtual lock-in amplifier can be used to obtain dI/dV
measurements. It can be used for advance approach algorithms to help estimate the coarse tip-sample
separation.
3.3 Fast In
With the Feedback settings configured, the probe should be ready to approach the sample. The approach
could take a long time if the R9 Software has to retract the tip between coarse steps if the tip-sample
separation is relatively large. In this case, the Fast In Approach Procedure can be used to quickly bring
the tip close to the sample.
Important
The tip will remain extended during the Fast In Procedure. It should stop when
feedback is detected. The Fast In procedure is not as safe as the Slow Approach
procedure.
The Approach Procedure will be highlighted on the Approach Procedure Panel while the
Procedure is running. Selecting the Approach Procedure again will stop the approach.

3.4 Slow Approach
The Fast Approach Procedure can be stopped manually when the tip and sample become very close.
Use the Slow Approach Procedure to close the remaining tip-sample separation. The Slow Approach
