Checking the thermostat
1. Measure:
Valve opening “a”
(at the specified water temperatures)
Out of specification Replace.
TIP:
Suspend the thermostat in a container of
water.
Place a thermo meter in the water, and then
heat the water slowly.
Cylinder block thermostat
Oil cooler thermostat and water jacket
thermostat
Checking the oil cooler cover anode
and water jacket anode
1. Check:
•Anode
Eroded (1/2 or more worn out) Replace.
Adhered grease, oil, or scales Clean.
Do not apply grease, oil, or paint to the an-
odes.
Installing the cylinder block
thermostat
1. Install:
•Gaskets
Cylinder block thermostats
Thermostat housings
Installing the water jacket cover
1. Install:
Water jacket anode
•Gasket
Water jacket cover (lower)
TIP:
Tighten the water jacket cover (lower) bolts to
the specified torques in 2 stages.
2. Install:
•Hose1
•Clamp2
TIP:
Point the end of the clamp forward.
Water temperature Valve opening “a”
58–62 °C
(136–144 °F)
Starts opening
above 70 °C
(158 °F)
5.0 mm (0.20 in) or

1st: 6 N·m (0.6 kgf·m, 4.4 lb·ft)
2nd: 10 N·m (1.0 kgf·m, 7.4 lb·ft)
