3 Getting Started
This section helps you to get familiar with the R&S SMU and provides an introduction to
the general concept of the instrument with a sample of the possible application fields as
well as a description of the main blocks in the signal generation flow.
This section also explains the operating concept in general and includes a brief intro-
duction to operation by a step-by-step description of the configuration. The example is
intended to provide a quick overview of the settings provided. No additional eqquipment
is required.
3.1 Brief Introduction to the Instrument's Concept
The R&S SMU combines up to two independent signal generators in one cabinet and
offers unrivaled RF and baseband characteristics. Due to its modular design, the instru-
ment can be optimally adapted to the requirements of different applications. Both RF
paths can be equipped with one of the available frequency options with different upper
frequency limit. Up to two generators can also be installed in the baseband section. They
generate complex signals in realtime and are equipped with an arbitrary waveform gen-
erator.
The R&S SMU provides an entirely digital baseband section for generating I/Q signals
and an RF section with I/Q modulator. The instrument uses I/Q (vector) modulation. Dig-
ital data streams are converted to an I/Q baseband signal. The baseband signal is then
D/A-converted and modulated onto the target RF carrier frequency with the aid of an I/Q
modulator.
The R&S SMU may contain two paths; through the user docmentation, the first being is
called path A and the second path B, respectively.
For a detailed description of the blocks in the baseband and RF sections, refer to chap-
ter 3.3, "Baseband Section", on page 71 and chapter 3.4, "RF Section", on page 75
respectively.
The operating concept of the R&S SMU employs the following three ways of instrument
control:
●
Manual operation
●
Remote control
●
Remote access
Manual Operation
The R&S SMU can be entirely operated from the front panel. Peripherals such as mouse
or keyboard can be connected but are not essential.
The R&S SMU is equipped with an intuitive user interface. The central element of the
display is the block diagram that shows the signal flow and processing from the left on
the display to most right, i.e. the generated signal can be seen at a glance.
