2. Installation - First Use of System
Recommended Storage Locations
The monitor should be stored in a dry location, protected from dust, sunlight,
moisture, snow/slush etc. Temperature must be maintained in the range 0ºC (32ºF) to
50ºC (122ºF) with relative humidity not exceeding 85% non-condensing. Do not
expose the monitor to water or dampness.
Recommended In-Service Location
Care should also be taken in elevated background conditions to ensure that
appropriate Self Shielding Factors are applied during alarm testing.
GEM-5 units are normally placed at the facility exit location in areas that are
typically at natural background radiation levels (to maximize throughput and
sensitivity), but can operate in higher exposure rate environments.
Specific Storage Locations
For Gamma scintillation detectors, ensure that any background “shine” is either
shielded by positioning the unit appropriately or with extra shielding as
required. Ensure that the unit has been optimized and calibrated with an appropriate
gamma-emitting source, which is most characteristic of the facility’s source
term. From the Service Menu, use the Shift+F2 – Additional Test Menu,
F1 – Optimize Gamma HV function of the Monitors’ software (on page 78).
Unpacking
Plastic scintillation gamma detectors and photomultiplier tubes that are fragile and
vulnerable to direct physical contact or shock. Any physical damage to the detectors
during unpacking, installation, or use is considered outside the warranty conditions
and will result in a charge for replacement.
In addition, lead shielding ingots for these models are packaged separately and should
be installed only when the monitor is placed in its final location.
The optional entrance and exit ramps for the GEM-5 are also packed separately and
are installed in-situ.
