Approach Sensor
The approach sensor is a passive infrared motion sensor, i.e. it detects infrared
radiation emitted by a body in its field of view. When this sensor is activated, the unit
goes from Background Update mode to Ready mode. Check sensitivity by placing
unit in service and triggering the "READY" screen or by observing the F6 – Sensor
Board Test screen in the F2 – Test Menu. The active range at the base of the unit
should be limited to 2 to 2.5 m (6 to 8 feet). The effective range of the sensor can be
controlled by adjusting the angle of the mounting bracket on the roof.
Since the GEM-5 monitors are bidirectional, i.e. they can be entered from either side,
there are two approach sensors on those units.

Occupied Sensor
The Occupied sensor detects the presence of a person within the unit. The monitor
goes from Background Update mode or Ready mode to Position mode when the
Occupied sensor is activated. If someone tries to cross through the monitor without
monitoring the "Monitoring not complete, please re-monitor" warning is given.
This sensor would indicate the correct monitoring position for one-step (pause and
count) and walkthrough modes on the GEM-5 monitor.
