Alarm Test vs. Occupant Alarm
Gem-5 User’s Manual 309
C. Special Information
Alarm Test vs. Occupant Alarm
There are two cases to help compare Alarm Test mode versus Occupant Alarms:
1. Monitor does not pass Alarm Test but does Alarm for Occupant.
2. Monitor passes Alarm Test but does not Alarm for Occupant.
Case 1
Monitor Does Not pass Alarm Test but does Alarm for Occupant.
1. Check F3 – Setup, F3 – Detection Zones, F2 – Settings – Self Shield Factor -
Alarm Test.
a. If source is held on end of a stick then there will be minimal self
shielding.
b. If source is held by operator then operator could be contributing self
shielding.
2. Check F3 – Setup, F3 – Detection Zones, F7 – Alarm Test Settings – Alarm Test
Type. If set to “Alarm Test” then sum zones are not checked and a source
between detectors may not alarm. (Set Alarm Test Type to “Coverage Test” if
testing between detectors).
3. Check F3 – Setup, F1 – Common Values – Count Gamma Body in 2 Steps
settings. In Alarm Test mode these detectors need to be counted twice to get a
contaminated result, (current reading is added with previous reading to get
required count time).
4. Confirm that F3 – Setup, F8 – Printout – Auto Save Alarm Test Results is set to
“YES”.
5. After doing an Alarm Test mode sequence with unexpected clean results, look
in D:\MonitorProgram\DATALOG for RESULT yyyymmddhhmmss
AT_.TXT files. Examine these files looking at the detectors that were expected
to alarm to see why they did not (Skip flag, low gross rate, high background
rate, etc.).
