Normal Service
Gem-5 User’s Manual 49
Normal Service
In Normal Service the contamination monitors provide monitoring of personnel
within the parameters established previously using the various Service Menu screens.
Normal Service for GEM-5 monitors comprises the following basic operating modes:
1. Background Initialization;
2. Background Collection;
3. Ready (to monitor);
4. Position (includes Turn);
5. Monitoring;
6. Clean or Contaminated (decision making);
7. Out of Service.
The monitoring sequence for standard monitors is shown as a flow chart in Figure 22
on page 51 (without access control options). Note that Position (2) and Turn does not
apply to the GEM-5 operating in One-Step or Walk-Through modes.
The basic monitoring cycle of a personnel monitor is described as follows:
• READY: It automatically detects the approach of a user, stops performing
automatic background updates on each of its detectors (including the frisker
if one is installed), and notifies the user that the unit is ready to monitor.
• POSITION: Visual and audible instructions guide the occupant to position
hands, feet and the body (as applicable for the unit) before monitoring.
• MONITOR: The unit then performs a complete monitoring cycle of the
occupant, in one-step or two-steps as configured applicable for the model (or
mode of operation selection as shown in the F5 – Configuration setup screen
in as the Monitor Steps item), while ensuring that all functions are operating
properly. If the occupant moves out of position during the monitoring cycle,
as signaled by a sensor, the unit stops the monitor count and requests the
occupant to reposition correctly.
• CLEAN/CONTAMINATED: The monitor then announces its findings, both
visually and audibly. Results are stored in the Monitor History file.
• BACKGROUND UPDATE: When the occupant leaves the unit returns to
updating the background for all of its detectors.
