Installation
Monitors are normally shipped fully assembled and most likely will arrive with
detectors mounted in the chassis frame.
All that is required is to first move the monitor to its final location and then:
Install all lead ingot bricks as applicable
Adjust the leveling feet as appropriate:
Figure 2 Leveling Feet
If applicable, attach the entrance and exit ramps (see Ramps on page 9 and
Entrance/Exit Ramps on page 335).
Connect the electrical hookups.
Lead Ingot Bricks
Lead shielding ingots are installed in-situ. The lead ingots are packaged separately
due to weight considerations.
The lead ingots are painted to make them non-toxic. However, the use of gloves is
recommended as a further precaution.
For the standard single layer of lead that comes with the GEM-5, a total of 27 lead
ingots (SCN 816034) are installed behind the gamma scintillation detectors on both
the front and back walls of the unit. Unlock and swing open the hinged frame
housing the detectors on one side of the monitor. The ingots can then be inserted
through slots in the side rails and slid down to their final location (use the “far” or
“outer” channels). Note that there are two slots, one at the top and the other at mid-
height, thus the ingots forming the bottom half of the shield do not have to be lifted to
