Chapter 3 Principle of Operation
62 Gem-5 User’s Manual
OUT OF SERVICE Mode
If a detector fault or circuit board failure is detected during any operating mode, then
a fault condition exists and the unit may go to the Out of Service mode depending on
the setting for that fault in the F4 Out of Service Causes screen. There are five Out
of Service screens, which are described later in this section.
The background color of the Out of Service screen is blue, which serves to quickly
identify a non-functioning system. The color of the information overlay text “Out of
Service” is yellow. The unit’s Monitor ID, Location ID, and Serial Number (as set
in F1 – Common Values) are displayed in order to give a consistent description of
the unit when reporting the problem. The Out of Service screen can have two
additional customized instructions (only one instruction is shown in Figure 30 on
page 63), for instance, to provide a phone number for reporting the fault. See F11
Operation Instruction Menu, F7 – Out of Service Instructions for details. A status
line at the bottom of the screen provides details of on-going background collections,
when applicable.
A service technician visit is required to clear the fault and return the unit to service,
unless the unit is in auto-recovery mode for the particular fault. Unlocking the
keyboard door (and/or connecting an external keyboard) and pressing the Esc key
when the Out of Service screen is displayed brings up the Faults screen (like Figure
105 on page 221), which should identify the fault.
A tally of overall service history, including out-of-service events, Alarm Tests, and
Service Menu usage, is kept in the Service History file (see F2 Service History
Printout in the F5 – Information Menu). The database also maintains a summary of
failures for each detection zone individually, including a breakout for each possible
detector failure cause. This information can be displayed on the screen, saved to a
text file or printed on a local or network printer.
A log of service events is maintained in the Service Data Log SERVICE.CSV, if
enabled. This log file records the time and date of any service operation, including
“Program Start”, “In Service”, “Out of Service”, “Menu Request”, “Alarm Test”,
“Settings Changed” and “Exit Program”. One line is appended to the Service Data
Log for each service event. When the file reaches its maximum size, the oldest data
is deleted. The Service Data Log can be enabled in the F7 – Data Log screen.
