WARNING
OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS,
INJURIES TO PERSONNEL AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
(1) Make sure that the following safety precautions are obeyed at all times.
(a) Put chocks in front of all aircraft wheels.
(b) Put the grit blast machine and the air supply equipment at least 30 feet (9.1 m) from the
nacelle inlet.
(c) Make sure that when the outlet hose and wand are fully extended, the end of the wand
will be at least 8 feet (2.4 meter) from the nacelle inlet.
(d) Attach the grit blast machine to a stable object so it will not move when it is operated.
(e) The grit blast operator must do these steps:
1) Empty all pockets.
2) Remove all loose objects such as badges and caps.
3) Use a safety belt and tether, STD-6564 connected by a tether to a stable object.
a) The tether (when fully extended) must keep the operator at least 10 feet (3
meter) from the nacelle inlet.
4) Wear safety goggles, STD-3904 to protect the eyes from particles that fly out of the
engine.
5) Wear a hearing protector headset, SPL-461.
(f) Make sure that the grit blast machine has no contamination in the funnel-shaped top.
NOTE: The top looks like a waste basket, make sure it has not been used as such.
(g) Position one person as a monitor at least 50 feet (15.2 meter) from the nacelle inlet of the
engine.
1) The monitor must be able to see both the grit blast operator and the airplane control
operator.
2) The monitor and the airplane control operator must use a headset/mike set so that
they can speak with each other at all times.
