Condition Maximum Serviceable Limits
Examine the 7th, 8th, and 11th-stage
manifolds (Figure 601):
Look for nicks, gouges, and scratches One permitted for each 4 square inches (26 sq cm) if less than 0.015 inch
(0.38 mm) in depth and 1 inch (25.4 mm) in length after you remove the high
metal. No sharp areas are permitted.
Look for cracks (except 8th-stage manifold
end caps)
Cracks are not permitted.
Look for 8th-stage manifold end cap
cracks
Cracks cannot be repaired. See the Continue-In-Operation Limits
Look for rubs, wear, or chafes Not permitted.
Look for dents There is no limit to the number of dents 0.25 inch (6.35 mm) in depth, with a
minimum separation of 2.0 inches (50.8 mm) if there is a radius at the bottom
of the dent with no cracks.
Look for holes that are fully through the
metal
Not permitted.

(3) Visually examine the horizontal flange bolts and nuts (Figure 602).

Nuts and bolts that are loose, broken
or gone
Bolts and nuts cannot be repaired. Lubricate and replace all the loose, broken or
missing bolts and nuts. Tighten the new bolts and nuts to the value shown.
*[1] If more than five horizontal flange bolts and nuts are loose broken, or missing, replace all bolts and nuts in both of the
horizontal flanges. Bolts are numbered in a sequence with the No. 1 both at the aft end of the HPC.

CAUTION
OFF-SCHEDULE STATOR VANE OPERATION CAN MAKE NECESSARY A
SPECIAL INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE AS SHOWN IN PARAGRAPH 3. IF
THE STATOR AND ROTOR PARTS ARE BOTH DAMAGED, IT IS POSSIBLE
YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.
(4) Visually examine the vanes.
Condition Maximum Serviceable Limits
Look for looseness All radial and side movement is permitted if the bushing or the washer is
not gone. No vane metal is permitted to touch the case metal. If it is
necessary, replace the outer flanged bushing
(PAGEBLOCK 72-35-00/801). See the Continue-in-Operation Limits.
Vane trunnion metal that touches the case
bore metal
Not permitted. Replace the outer flanged bushing
(PAGEBLOCK 72-35-00/801).
Look for bent, incorrectly assembled, or
broken lever arms.
If you see these conditions, do the HPC VSV Off-Schedule Inspection (the
next task).
(a) Look for cracks in these areas:
Narrow tang opposite of the actuation arm
pin on the 5th-stage lever arms (Figure 604)
Cracks are permitted if the tang is rigid.
All the other areas Not permitted. Replace the lever arm (PAGEBLOCK 72-35-00/801).
