M. Oil System Contamination Inspection
SUBTASK 72-00-00-216-077-G00
(1) Do a check of scavenge inlet screens (5 ports) for the lube and scavenge pump
(TASK 79-21-06-202-020-G00).
NOTE: This inspection procedure gives instructions to examine the unwanted material that is
found in the magnetic chip detector or the scavenge screens and filters in the lube
system. The unwanted material can be a sign of damage in a part of the engine that is
wet with oil. It is normal for small particles to be collected. Pieces of tools, machining
chips, and shotpeen residue can be found also. These normal small particles of
unwanted material can be ignored.
(a) Make a record of the port that you examine.
NOTE: The port identification numbers are on the bottom of the pump housing.
SUBTASK 72-00-00-866-078-G00
(2) If you are not sure about the material that you find in the screens, do the steps that follow:
(a) Install magnetic plugs (for fault isolation) in the base of each screen.
NOTE: You can use the fault isolation plugs continuously, but they can limit the magnetic
chip detector. You must examine the fault isolation plugs at the same time as the
magnetic chip detector if they are used continuously.
(b) Use the Power Plant Operation (Normal) procedure to start and shutdown the engine
(TASK 71-00-00-802-133-G00 and TASK 71-00-00-802-133-G00).
SUBTASK 72-00-00-216-079-G00
(3) Do the steps that follow to examine the fault isolation plugs:
WARNING
DO NOT GET METHYL ETHYL KETONE (MEK) IN YOUR MOUTH OR
EYES, OR ON YOUR SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM MEK.
PUT ON A RESPIRATOR, PROTECTIVE SPLASH GOGGLES, AND
GLOVES WHEN YOU USE MEK. KEEP MEK AWAY FROM SPARKS,
FLAME, AND HEAT. MEK IS A POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE SOLVENT
WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT.
(a) Use solvent, B00148 to clean the oil from the unwanted material.
(b) Isolate the magnetic material, and the large or unique pieces.
(c) If you are not able to identify which part the material came from, send the material to a
qualified laboratory for spectrographic analysis.
(d) If you find that internal ("A", "B", or "C" sump) bearing failure has occurred, do the steps
that follow:
1) Do not operate the engine.
2) Replace the engine as soon as it is possible (TASK 71-00-02-004-004-G00 and
TASK 71-00-02-404-233-G00).
3) You must clean the lube system.
SUBTASK 72-00-00-216-080-G00
(4) Examine the unwanted material found in the lube and scavenge pump, the transfer gearbox,
the scavenge inlet screen and the fault isolation plugs as follows:
(a) If you find bearing cage rivets, this shows a failure of the radial drive shaft bearing.
(b) If you find aluminum shim material, this shows wear of the inlet gearbox.
