PUT ON A RESPIRATOR, PROTECTIVE SPLASH GOGGLES, AND
GLOVES WHEN YOU USE MEK. KEEP MEK AWAY FROM SPARKS,
FLAME, AND HEAT. MEK IS A POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE SOLVENT
WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT.
(d) Clean the remaining adhesive with technical grade methyl ethyl ketone, B50046.

(4) Remove the number three VBV door as follows (Figure 805):
(a) Remove the clevis bolt, two washers, and nut that attach the rod-end bearing to the VBV.
NOTE: Do not remove the lockwire or adjust the jamnut on the bearing rod-end.
(b) Remove the bolt that attaches the bypass valve bellcrank to the unison ring.
(c) Remove the two fan frame bolts, two washers, and two nuts that attach the hinge
assembly to the fan frame.
(d) Remove the VBV and the hinge assembly from the fan frame.

(5) Adjust the VSV system to the full open position (PAGEBLOCK 75-31-03/501).

(6) Loosen (unshingle) the blade or blades as follows:
(a) Insert an appropriate size wooden or plastic dowel through the VBV door, and carefully
push the shingled stage 1 HPC blades apart.
(b) Rotate the core and continue to loosen the stage 1 blades as necessary.

(7) Examine the HPC stage 1 blades for bent mid-span shrouds as follows:
(a) Look aft through the VBV door.
(b) Compare the radial alignment of the mid-span shroud on the blade that was loosened
and the mid-span shrouds of the adjacent blades.
(c) If there is a large difference in the alignments, replace the engine
(PAGEBLOCK 71-00-02/401).
(d) After the initial repair, do the steps that follow:
1) You must do a borescope inspection of the HPC Stage 1 blades after 25 cycles but
no later than 50 cycles after the repair is completed.
2) You must do another borescope inspection after 200 cycles but no later than 250
cycles after the repair is completed.

(8) Install the number three VBV door as follows (Figure 805):
(a) Put the VBV and the hinge assembly on the fan frame bypass port.
(b) Install the VBV and the hinge assembly with the two fan frame bolts, two washers, and
two nuts.
1) Put the bolt head aft and put a washer under the bolt head.
2) Tighten the nuts to 33-37 pound-inches (3.7-4.2 N.m).
