COMPRESSOR SECTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. General
A. Primary purpose of compressor section is to compress incoming air to engine and to supply
combustion section with a sufficient amount of air to support combustion.
B. Principle modules of compressor section consist of a fan rotor, fan stator, and high pressure
compressor.
2. Component Details
A. Fan Rotor Assembly
(1) Fan rotor assembly consists of 1st-stage fan and 3 stages of low pressure. Both fan and low
pressure compressor are mounted on a common internal concentric shaft. This shaft connects
fan rotor assembly to low pressure turbine. Low pressure turbine provides rotational force to
drive fan rotor.
(2) 1st-Stage Fan
(a) 1st-stage disk is forged and machined form titanium. Axial dovetail slots allow 38
individual 1st-stage blade removal/installation without major disassembly. Aft inner flange
of the disk is secured to the fan forward shaft and the aft outer flange is secured to the
2nd thru 4th-stage low pressure compressor spool.
(b) 1st-stage fan blades are approximately 28 inches (711.2 mm) in length. Integral platforms
on 1st-stage blades provide a contoured surface for smooth airflow through fan. Mid-span
shrouds protrude from both sides of blade airfoils interlocking with shrouds on adjacent
blades to form a continuous ring which provides torsional rigidity and dampens vibration.
A spring-loaded, keyed retainer exerts a radial force on blade while keyed retainer
engages forward flange of disk to prevent blades form moving axially forward. Spacers in
dovetail slots support blade radially outward. Removal of spacers allows blades to move
radially inward. This disengages mid-span shrouds allowing individual blade removal/
installation.
(c) Fan rotor spinner forms a fairing to guide air flow into fan. A shoulder in spinner contacts
forward face of disk, covers dovetail slots, and helps to hold blades axially in slots.
Spinner retains balance screws that aid in balancing of fan rotor assembly.
(3) Low Pressure Compressor
(a) 2nd thru 4th-stage low pressure compressor spool has installed all 204 blades in three
stages of low pressure compressor. Each blade is approximately six inches long and
serve primarily to supercharge high compressor. Spool is forged from titanium and
machined with circumferential dovetail slots, locking lugs, and balance weights. Rotating
air seal serrations are machined between each stage on outside diameter of spool.
Spool, blades, and air seal serrations form a single piece of rotor structure.
B. Fan Stator Assembly
(1) When fan stator assembly is coupled with fan rotor assembly low pressure compressor is
formed. Fan stator consists of 1st thru 3rd-stage vanes, 1st thru 3rd-stage inner shrouds, 1st
thru 3rd-stage casings and a 1st-stage fairing. Each casing is a full 360° in circumference.
(2) 1st-stage case does not house vane segments but has abradable teflon material for 2nd-stage
rotor blades. 2nd-stage case is bolted to 1st-stage case and contains 2nd-stage vanes. Rear
portion of 2nd-stage case has teflon material for 3rd-stage rotor blades. 3rd-stage case is
bolted to 2nd-stage case and contains 3rd-stage vanes. Abradable teflon material is
incorporated into aft portion of the 3rd-stage case for 4th-stage rotor blades. 3rd-stage case
bolts to 4th-stage stator case which is bolted to fan frame.
