ENGINE - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. General
A. CF6-80 engine is composed of a compressor section, combustion section, turbine section, and an
accessory drive system. Each section (or system) is made up of subassemblies.
B. Engine is designed so that large subassemblies can be removed, exchanged, and installed
separately. This does not affect engine integrity or performance. It is termed modular construction.
C. Engine is a dual-rotor, axial-flow turbofan powerplant having a high bypass ratio. The 14-stage high
pressure compressor is driven by a 2-stage high pressure turbine, and the integrated front fan and
low pressure compressor is driven by a 4-stage low pressure turbine. An annular combustor
converts fuel and compressor discharge air into energy to drive the turbines. Accessory drive system
extracts energy from the high pressure compressor rotor to drive the engine-mounted accessories.
Reverse thrust for braking airplane after landing is supplied by an integrated system which acts on
fan discharge airflow. For a more detailed description of the thrust reverser system,
