(b) Do a check of the general condition of the acoustical panels, the outlet guide vanes, the
case, and other adjacent areas (TASK 72-33-05-206-001-G00).
(c) Do a check of the general condition of the forward fan case
(PAGEBLOCK 72-33-04/601).
(d) Do a check of the general condition of the spinner (TASK 72-31-01-216-001-G00).
(e) Do a check of the engine exhaust area for metal particles.
(f) Do a check of the general condition of the fairings and of the stator vanes for the fan
booster (TASK 72-35-00-206-018-G00).
(g) Do a check of the general condition of the fan inlet cowling.
(h) Do a check of the general condition of the compressor rotor.

(6) Borescope inspection:
(a) Do the borescope inspection for engine stages 1 and 12. If damage is found, replace the
engine (TASK 71-00-02-004-004-G00 and TASK 71-00-02-404-233-G00).
O. Volcanic Ash/Sand Ingestion Inspection
SUBTASK 72-00-00-216-093-G00
(1) General
(a) This task is the inspection of the engine for damage because of volcanic ash/sand
ingestion.
(b) If volcanic ash or sand ingestion of both engines has occurred, you must do the
inspection procedure for one engine. If you do not find damage, the volcanic ash or sand
ingestion inspection of the second engine can be deferred for up to 5 cycles.
(c) The long-term effects of operation in low concentrations, less than 2,000 micrograms/m3
(2.0 milligrams/m3) are not fully understood. GE has released Service Bulletins for a
leading indicator program to monitor selected engines to understand the long-term
effects. 2,000 micrograms/m3 (2.0 milligrams/m3) is the approximate density threshold at
which ash is visually detectable.
(d) Do not water wash an engine which has experienced volcanic ash or sand ingestion until
the volcanic ash or sand has been removed from the engine and wait a minimum of 5
flights before water wash. Water wash can cause volcanic ash or sand to accumulate in
the HPT nozzle and blade cooling paths and cause reduced cooling flow and can also
cause rotor imbalance from accumulation of material that collects and dries in the rotor
spools.
(e) Install engine covers when aircraft is parked and put the aircraft in position to limit ash or
sand accumulation from wind and jet blasts from other aircraft.
(f) Clean the ramp area before you start the engine. Start both engines on a clean ramp
area and try not to do cross-bleed starts or single-engine taxi which may make higher
thrust levels necessary. Try not to taxi close to other aircraft to minimize ash or sand
ingestion. Select the cleanest taxi routes available.
(g) Minimize breakaway and taxi thrust. Try not to use high thrust when there is ash or sand
contamination. Try not to do static high thrust operation.
1) Try not to do operations in visible or discernable ash or sand. Discernable ash or
sand is ash or sand that can be sensed by human sight or other senses.
2) If you operate the engine in visible or discernable ash or sand, take immediate
action to exit the ash or sand.
