CAUTION
MAKE SURE THE DRIVE SHAFT HEAD IS IN THE 90 DEGREE POSITION
WHEN YOUR REMOVE OR INSTALL THE TOOL TIP TO THE DRIVE
SHAFT HEAD. IF YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL THE TOOL TIP WITH THE
DRIVE SHAFT HEAD IN THE ZERO DEGREE POSITION, THE DRIVE
BELT WILL DISENGAGE.
(k) Put the drive shaft head to the 90 degree position and remove the measuring grid tip.
(l) Select the applicable grind tip to blend the HPC blade that is damaged.
(m) Put the drive shaft head to the 90 degree position and insert the grind tip.
(n) Attach the light source to the blend tool.
(o) Put the blend tool tip to the zero degree position.

(5) Prepare to do the blend repair as follows:
(a) Put the blend tool tip into the compressor through the borescope access port.
CAUTION
MAKE SURE THE BLEND TIP FACES AWAY FROM THE OPERATOR IN
THE 90 DEGREE POSITION. START THE DRIVE MOTOR AND MAKE
SURE THE TIP ROTATES IN THE CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. IF THE
DIRECTION OF ROTATION IS COUNTER CLOCKWISE, DO A CHECK OF
THE DRIVE BELT FOR A POSSIBLE TWISTED INSTALLATION.
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE CAN OCCUR IF THE BLEND TIP DOES NOT
FACE AWAY FROM THE OPERATOR IN THE 90 DEGREE POSITION.
(b) Put the primary blade edge grinding tip in the borescope port and view the tool tip.
1) Move the tool tip from the zero degree to the 90 degree position.
(c) Put the primary blade edge grinding tip close to the damage on the HPC blade.
(d) Align the blend tool tip with the blade damage and check for correct movement across
the total length of the area to be blended.
1) Do not start the drive motor at this time.
(e) Use the primary blade edge grinding tip to mark the two ends of the blade damage.
1) The radial length of the blend can be eight times the maximum depth of the blend,
on each side of the defect.

(6) Do the blend repair as follows:
(a) Start the drive motor (Figure 811) and apply pressure to the grind tip at the damage area.
(b) Make sure that the grind tip turns clockwise.
NOTE: If an alternative borescope blending tool is used, the tip can turn
counter-clockwise. Be sure to follow the tool manufacturer instructions.
1) If it turns counter-clockwise, check the drive belt for a possible twisted installation.
(c) After sufficient practice with the grind tip on the blade leading edge surface, turn on the
motor with the on/off switch and increase the speed with the motor speed control.
1) If the grind tip does not turn freely, it is possible that too much pressure has been
applied to the blade edge surface.
(d) During blending, make sure to put a contour on the edge of the blade and remove the
sharp edges.
