High ISO NR
Photos taken at long shutter speeds can
suffer from increased “noise” and the
D5300 therefore offers the option of extra
image processing to counteract this. If
Long exposure noise reduction (its full
name) is On, it applies at exposure times of
1 sec. or longer. During image processing,
Job nr flashes in the Viewfinder. The time
Photos taken at high ISO settings can also
be marred by increased “noise”. The
default setting of Normal applies a
middling level of NR. This can be changed
to Low or High. It can also be set to Off,
but light-touch NR is still applied to JPEG
images taken at ISO 1250 or above.
Tip
High levels of NR will remove most
noise but can “smooth” the image
so much it looks “plastic” and loses
any semblance of fi ne detail. And
with JPEG images, you can’t restore
any of the lost texture or detail.
Unless you’re in a hurry, it’s better
to apply noise-reduction in post-
processing, when you can see the
eff ect more clearly and back off
if necessary.
taken is roughly equal to the shutter speed
in use, and no further pictures can be
taken until processing is complete. This
causes significant delays in shooting and
many users prefer to use post-processing
to reduce image noise. For this reason,
Long exp. NR is Off by default.
This menu governs ISO sensitivity settings,
discussed in depth on page 85.
This menu governs release mode options,
and offers the same choices as using
and the Active Information Display (see
page 32).
When you can merge images on the
computer, precisely and flexibly, it might
seem that cameras like the D5300 hardly
need a multiple exposure facility. However,
the Nikon manual states “multiple
exposures produce colors noticeably
superior to those in software-generated
photographic overlays.” It’s debatable
whether this would apply if you shot
individual RAW images for careful post-
processing before merging them on the
computer, but clearly this feature does
offer an effective way to combine images
