THE EXPANDED GUIDE
FLASH

INTRODUCTION / FILL-IN FLASH
»
FILL-IN FLASH
A key application for flash is for “fill-in”
light, giving a lift to dark shadows like
those cast by direct sunlight. This is why
pros regularly use flash in bright sunlight
(exactly when most people would think
it unnecessary).
Fill-in flash doesn’t need to illuminate
the shadows fully, only to lighten them a
little. This means the flash can be used at a
smaller aperture, or greater distance, than
when it’s the main light (averaging around
2 Ev smaller, or four times the distance).
FILL-IN FLASH
The background exposure is the same for both
shots, and really the difference made by the
flash is only obvious when you look at the
faces—but faces matter. 16mm, 1/200 sec.,
f/8, ISO 200.
i-TTL balanced fill-flash
for DSLR
Nikon’s i-TTL balanced fill-flash helps
achieve natural-looking results when using
fill-in flash. It comes into play automatically
provided (a) matrix or center-weighted
metering is selected and (b) a CPU-
equipped lens is attached: most of the
time, in other words.
The flash (built-in or compatible
flashgun) emits a series of virtually invisible
pre-flashes immediately before exposure.
Light reflected from these pre-flashes is
detected by the metering sensor and
analyzed, together with the ambient light.
If Type D or G lenses are used, distance
information is also incorporated.
