D-Lighting (page 98), and Nikon Picture
Controls (page 99). It also allows manual
selection of ISO rating (page 85).
You can change things even more in
P mode through options like flexible
program (see below), exposure lock (page
67), and exposure compensation (page
66), and you have complete freedom to
use flash—or not—as you wish.
1) Rotate the Mode Dial to position P.
2) Frame the picture.
3) Half-depress the release button to
activate focusing and exposure. The focus
point(s) are displayed in the Viewfinder
image and shutter speed and aperture
settings appear at the bottom of the
Viewfinder.
4) Fully depress the shutter release to take
the picture.
Flexible program
Without leaving P mode you can change
the combination of shutter speed and
aperture by rotating the Command Dial.
While flexible program is in effect the P
indication in the Information Display
changes to P*. The shutter speed/aperture
combination in the Viewfinder can be seen
to change.
This does not change the overall
exposure, i.e. it does not make the picture
darker or lighter. What it does do is shift
the combination of shutter speed and
aperture. This gives you a speedy way to
choose, for example, a faster shutter speed
to freeze action, or a smaller aperture to
increase depth of field (page 60), quickly
gaining much of the control that S or A
modes offer.
