NIKON D5300
1
OVERVIEW
The D5300 is the latest model in Nikon’s advanced “consumer” series,
occupying a middle position in the DX-format camera range, between the
entry-level D3200 and the “enthusiast” or “semi-pro” D7100. The D5XXX
series stands apart from all other Nikon digital SLRs in having an articulating
rear screen, which offers extra flexibility when shooting in Live View and can
be especially helpful when shooting movies.

EVOLUTION OF THE NIKON D5300
Nikon has always valued continuity as well
as innovation; for instance, it has retained
its tried and tested F lens-mount (originally
introduced in 1959!). This means it’s
possible to use many classic Nikon lenses
with the latest digital single-lens reflex
cameras (DSLRs) like the D5300, though
care is needed and some camera functions
(e.g. autofocus) may be lost (see Chapter
7, page 184).
Nikon’s first DSLR was the 1.3-megapixel
E2s. It had no rear screen and images could
only be viewed by connecting it to an
external device. A far more practical
introduction was the 2.7-megapixel D1, in
1999. Still the most influential digital
camera ever launched, the D1 was the first
DSLR to approach the flexibility and ease
of handling of 35mm SLRs. Its sensor
adopted the DX format, subsequently used
in every Nikon DSLR until the “full-frame”
(FX) D3 in 2008.
In 2004, Nikon introduced their first
“enthusiast” DSLR, the 6-megapixel D70; its
direct descendants were the D80 (2006)
and then the D90 (2008), but by then the
range had diversified further, with a new
“entry-level” series, beginning with the D40
(2006). This was followed by the D60 (2008)
and then by the D3000, D3100, and D3200.
Meanwhile, the D90 was one of Nikon’s
most significant launches; a range of new
features was overshadowed by one
headline-grabber as it became the first
DSLR capable of shooting video. The D90
remained on sale (and indeed is still listed
today) even as many of its innovations
