As discussed earlier (page 60), focal length is one of the key factors affecting depth of
field—and it’s intimately linked with distance. What you gain by switching to a wide-angle
lens, you can lose again (at least partly) if you then move closer to your main subject.
THE RIGHT TRACK
Photographing this track and the surrounding landscape,
there is no single localized “subject” and I knew that the
result would look unnatural if any part of the image ended
up unsharp. The combination of a short focal length, a
fairly small aperture, and a focus point in the middle of the
track ensured that depth of field covered everything.
