PERSPECTIVE
Perspective concerns the visual
relationship between objects at different
distances. The apparent fading of distant
objects due to haze is atmospheric
perspective, while optical perspective
relates to the changes in apparent size
of objects at different distances.
It’s often stated that different lenses
give different perspective. This is wrong:
perspective is determined purely by
distance. However, different lenses do lend
themselves to different working distances
and therefore are often associated with
different perspectives.
A strong emphasis on the foreground
may be called “wide-angle perspective”
because a wide-angle lens allows you to
move closer to foreground objects.
Similarly, the apparent compression of
perspective in telephoto shots is a result
of the greater working distance with
the long lens.
PERSPECTIVE
In this series of shots (taken with, from
top to bottom, 170mm, 55mm, and 18mm
lenses) the structures remain the same apparent
size even though viewed from different
distances, but their apparent shape and their
relationship to the background change radically.
