LIGHT AND EXPOSURE
pays to make the small extra effort of
checking exposure carefully and making
an adjustment if necessary, perhaps either
by using exposure compensation or by
shooting in Manual mode.
Soft light presents different challenges.
Exposure determination is usually easy and
the camera rarely gets it far wrong; the
issue, instead, is that soft light, with its lack
of strong shadows and contrast, can easily
lead to images that look flat or dull. It can
work well, however, for subjects with
strong colors, shapes, or patterns.
SOFT LIGHT
Some people might have seen this as a dull day,
but I found it visually very stimulating. There’s a
subtle but rich palette of color and there is also
a strong sense of perspective with several
“markers” at different distances, such as the
nearby trees, the distant plantation, and the
profile of the ridge, as well as the mist. 20mm,
1/80 sec., f/11, ISO 200, tripod.
