THE EXPANDED GUIDE
MENUS
»
CUSTOM SETTING MENU
c: Timers/AE Lock
c1 Shutter-release button AE-L
This determines whether you can lock
exposure by half-pressure on the shutter-
release button. By default, this item is Off,
which means that half-pressure locks focus
only (see Focus lock, page 76), and you
can only lock exposure with the
button. Change it to On, and half-pressure
locks both focus and exposure.
c2 Auto off timers
Governs the interval before the relevant
displays turn off when idle. A shorter delay
improves battery life. The displays do not
turn off automatically when the D5300 is
connected to a computer.
The options you can select are Short,
Medium, or Long; these set different
intervals for different camera functions
(see the table below). Short is a good
choice if you want to economize battery
life. You can also set your own Custom
intervals for each of these timers.
Custom Setting c2 Auto off timers
Interval for: Short Normal Long
Playback/menus 20 sec. 1 min. 5 min.
Image review 4 sec. 4 sec. 20 sec.
Live view 5 min. 10 min. 20 min.
Standby timer 4 sec. 8 sec. 1 min.
c3 Self-timer
This menu has two sub-menus governing
the operation of the self-timer.
Self-timer delay determines the interval
between pressing the button and the shot
being taken. The default is 10 sec.,
alternatives are 2, 5, and 20 sec.
As well as taking a single shot, you can
create sequences from one press of the
release button. Number of shots can be set
anywhere from 1 to 9; if you set any value
larger than 1, the interval between
successive shots is approximately 4 sec.
c4 Remote on Duration (ML-L3)
If you’re using the optional ML-L3 remote
control (see page 212), this governs how
long the camera will remain on standby for
a signal from the remote before remote
control mode turns off. Options range
from 1 min (default) to 15 min. This does
not apply in Live View shooting.
