COMPOSITION
There’s a lot of nonsense talked about composition and above all about “rules” of
composition. Composition—or framing, which is the word I prefer—is about what you can
see and what you want to say about it. It’s about what’s in the picture and what’s left out. It’s
about where you shoot from and the focal length you use. With all this going on, “rules”, if
they have any value at all, are a long way down the list and fretting about them just takes
your mind off more important things.
FILLING THE FRAME
The choices here were
nothing to do with rules,
but all about filling the frame.
With my 70–200mm zoom
lens at its longest setting, the
zig-zag lines of the road—
complemented by the walls
and river—created a pattern
which was quite striking even
before the cyclists entered
the shot. I took several shots
as they travelled down the
valley, but this first one, with
them close to the bottom of
the frame, was the strongest.
It certainly helps that they
both had red jerseys. Color is
also an integral element in
composition.
