The term “zoom” covers lenses with
variable focal length, like the AF-S DX
Nikkor 18–105mm f/3.5-5.6G. A zoom lens
can replace a bagful of prime lenses and
cover the gaps in between, scoring highly
for weight, convenience, and economy.
Flexible focal length also allows very
precise framing.
While once considered inferior in
optical quality, there is now little to choose
between a good zoom and a good prime
lens, at least in terms of general sharpness
and contrast. Most zoom lenses will have
a “sweet spot” somewhere in the zoom
range where distortion is minimal, but
many show discernible barrel distortion
at wide settings and pincushion at the
long end.
Zooms with a very wide range (e.g.
18–200mm or 28–300mm) may still be
optically compromised, and usually have a
relatively small (“slow”) maximum aperture,
but they are undeniably versatile. That
wide, uninterrupted zoom range can prove
useful for movie shooting in particular.
