FLASH
I generally think flash photographs are most successful if you can’t readily tell that flash has
been used at all: no glare, no over-lit subjects popping out from the background, and no ugly
shadows going in the wrong direction. But that’s partly personal preference. It also doesn’t
lend itself to examples for this chapter: if you can’t see the effect of the flash, what does the
image tell you? So here are a couple of examples where the use of flash is undeniably obvious.
LIGHT FANTASTIC
Another view of the sculpture seen on page 147. The
reverse angle means the sky is brighter and also brings
streetlights and traffic into the reckoning. A four-second
exposure stretched the lights of moving cars into abstract
trails. The flash was off-camera on the right. It took a couple
of attempts before I was satisfied with both the position of
the flash and its brightness level.
