Off-camera flash
Taking the flash off the camera gives you
complete control over the direction of the
light. The flash can be fired using a flash
cord. Nikon’s dedicated cords preserve
i-TTL metering (see page 139).
DIRECTIONAL FLASH
The first shot (top) was taken using the built-in
flash, making this three-dimensional
arrangement look distinctly flat. The center shot
uses indirect flash from the right. The image
below uses flash bounced off a ceiling, giving
softer, more even light, but retaining a 3D
quality. Notice there’s also a color shift because
the bounce surface is not a neutral reflector.
